How “Fallen Arches” Cause More Than Just Foot Pain
When you look at your footprint, do you see a curve on the inside, or does your entire sole touch the ground?
If you have Flat Feet (also known as Fallen Arches), you aren’t alone. For many people, this condition is painless and present from birth. But for others, the lack of an arch is the “silent” cause of chronic fatigue, knee strain, and lower back pain.
At Batavia Foot Care Center, we know that your feet are the foundation of your entire body. If the foundation is flat, the rest of the structure struggles to stay upright. Read on to learn why flat feet matter…and how we fix them!
What Actually Happens When Arches Fall?
A normal arch acts as a natural shock absorber. It flexes when you step and springs back to propel you forward.
- The Mechanics: In flat feet, the tendons and ligaments that support the arch are undeveloped or have collapsed due to stress.
- The Result: Instead of absorbing shock, your foot rolls inward (overpronation). This forces your ankles, knees, and hips to twist internally to compensate.
Signs You Have “Symptomatic” Flat Feet
You might not feel pain in your arch, but you might feel it elsewhere.
- Leg & Back Pain: Misalignment travels upward. That nagging lower back pain might be a foot problem.
- Fatigue: Do your legs feel heavy or tired after a short walk? Your muscles are working overtime to stabilize a wobbly foot.
- Swelling: The strain can cause fluid buildup around the inside of the ankle.
- Difficulty Moving: Stiffness or aching after periods of rest.
The Solution: Rebuilding the Arch
You don’t always need surgery to fix flat feet. Most cases respond beautifully to conservative care that restores alignment.
1. Custom Orthotics (The Gold Standard)
Store-bought inserts are just cushions. Custom Orthotics are structural supports.
- How they work: We take a mold of your foot in its optimal, neutral position. The orthotic acts as a permanent “floor” for your arch, preventing it from collapsing with every step.
- The Benefit: By stopping the inward roll, we instantly relieve the torque on your knees and back.
2. Supportive Shoes
- We can guide you toward “Stability” or “Motion Control” shoes that have a firmer heel counter and wider base to prevent rolling.
3. Physical Therapy
- Stretching tight calf muscles and strengthening the small muscles of the foot can help support the tendon and reduce strain.
