A Podiatrist’s Guide to Pregnancy Foot Problems

Pregnancy is a time of incredible transformation, but the physical changes can take a toll on your feet and ankles. Increased weight, swelling, and hormonal shifts can lead to a variety of pregnancy foot problems, and unfortunately, those problems won’t just vanish on their own. As women and as medical professionals, the podiatrists at Batavia Foot Care Center understand these challenges, and we’re here to help you navigate them.

Pregnancy Problems, Foot and Ankle Fixes

  1. Edema (Swelling):
    • Why it Happens: Increased blood volume and fluid retention, combined with pressure from the growing uterus on the veins in your legs, can cause swelling in the feet and ankles, especially in the later stages of pregnancy.
  2. Overpronation (Flat Feet):
    • Why it Happens: The hormone relaxin, which loosens ligaments in preparation for childbirth, can also affect the ligaments in your feet. This, combined with increased weight, can cause your arches to flatten, leading to overpronation (your feet rolling inward).
  3. Plantar Fasciitis:
    • Why it Happens: The increased weight and changes in gait during pregnancy can put extra strain on the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue on the bottom of your foot, leading to inflammation and heel pain.
  4. Ingrown Toenails:

Options for At-Home Relief

Any of the above look uncomfortably familiar? You can find relief by prioritizing…

  • Stretching: Stretch your plantar fascia and calf muscles regularly.
  • Supportive Shoes: Wear shoes with good arch support and a wide toe box. Avoid high heels, flip-flops, and excess pressure from tight fits.
  • Proper Nail Trimming: Cut straight across, not rounded at the corners.
  • Soaking: Soaking with warm water and Epsom salts may also offer some relief.
  • Elevation: Whenever possible, elevate your feet above your heart.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out excess fluids.
  • Compression Stockings: Wear compression stockings to improve circulation and reduce swelling.
